PAULA MURRAY RECORDS HER IMPRESSIONS OF GORMANSTON YOUNG PIONEER ACTIVITY WEEKEND 2O02
The Gormanston Youth Activity Weekend for young pioneers from all over Ireland attracted some 250 teenagers and young adults from June 22nd-24th. It was organised by the Meath diocesan pioneers.
Gormanston College, founded by the Franciscans in 1954 is a beautiful and majestic place by any standards. Tastefully laid out and with spacious grounds and facilities including a gym and swimming pool, it is an ideal setting for a large group of young people to relax, learn and have a bit of "craic".
My abiding thought throughout the entire day I spent at the activity weekend in Gormanston, was the high quality and peronal goodness of the young pioneers I met. They were not dull, insipid, or lethargic, but were fired up and enthusiastic about life, as well as about their pioneer membership. There was none of the loutish behaviour so commonly a feature of many "get-togethers" of Iirsh youngsters in 2002. These 250 young pioneers are potent witnesses of the power of abstinence in what proved to be a drug, drink and cigarette-free weekend. Isn't there room for encouraging other young people, both within and outside the Pioneers, to sample pioneer events around the country, visit the chat room on the website, and talk directly to the young pioneers to find out what makes them such an impressive force? If you wish to make a comment, write to the Editor(Editor, Pioneer Magazine, 27 Upr. Sherrard Street, Dublin 1) or log in to the Pioneer website ... http://www.pioneertotal.ie
